The Hamilton County Environmental Action Commission
(HCEAC)

The Hamilton County Environmental Action Commission (HCEAC) was established in November of 1991 by then Ohio EPA Director, Donald R. Schregardus. This community-based group has representatives from the public, academia, industry and government. The Commission provides a forum for a broad range of stakeholders to discuss environmental issues and identify ways to improve environmental quality in the Cincinnati area.

In 2008 the Commission will meet on the first Thursday of every month except July and August at 1:00 at the Hamilton County Department of Environmental Services.  These meetings are open to the public.

The meetings feature an update on county environmental issues, a possible update on one of the 7 initiatives which are an outgrowth of the Hamilton County Environmental Priorities Project and a featured speaker on varying environmental topics.

For many years the Commission distributed an Environmental Directory for Hamilton County listing environmental, government, and non-government organizations.  The Tri-state Environmental Resource Center expanded this Directory to include regional listings and posted it on their web site. Both of these are being replaced by the Community Action Network Directory maintained by Hamilton County Planning and Zoning in the Community System link under Environment.  http://www.hamilton-co.org/hcrpc/canDirectory.asp

The commission has no budget or funding accounts.  The Commission in the past has designed projects or programs and handed them off to other organizations. To accomplish its objectives, the Commission may :

  • Be a think tank and catalyst for action on past, present and future problems
  • Identify, study and recommend strategies for improving the environment
  • Stimulate other groups to take on responsibility for action
  • Publish factual information and sponsor public forums
  • Practice collaborative and consensual  decision making
  • Provide a network for information exchange between members
  • Consider ideas and projects that address sustainability, environmental justice,  smart growth and economic prosperity
  • Hold open Commission  meetings that are frank, civil and not encumbered by passion, self interest or duty
